At the end of the day, the feeling that someone is watching you and your actions, your ups and downs is nothing but just your personal fear. Mistakes that are associated with any actions and projects we do (there is no perfection as you remember) can become an anchor that stops you from sailing further toward your aspirations and goals.
People often stop their progress as they are afraid their actions, feelings, and intentions are not understood or accepted.
At the end of the day, we cannot make everyone happy. There is always an opponent to your ideas and views. This should stimulate you to shape your ideas while being open to an opposite opinion.
The controversy should be taken as a way to make things better, open your horizons, and see your potential from different angles.
Mistakes should be taken as a motivation to learn and grow to succeed further in whatever you aim to do.
It might sound harsh if being taken out of context but, realistically speaking, we live in a very self-centered world where no one really cares about you. In terms of highs and lows, we tend to care so much about our personal lives that we have a short attention span for others’ rises and falls. Therefore, being self-cautious is just a product of your inner insecurity, that’s all.
“It is better to do something and regret than regret that you have never done it” – it always works. The biggest regret you are going to have will be around an opportunity that you missed out on due to your fear of making a mistake.
If the points above were not persuasive enough, put it this way. If you worry about making a mistake because you are afraid of other people’s judgments, you should understand that your life is so much more interesting and fulfilling that they dedicate their time judging you while you dedicate your time to bettering your good life! If you are afraid of making a mistake because you don’t want to be hurt, you have to see what is the worst that can happen to you. In most circumstances, it is just the fact that you tried and you didn’t win but you didn’t lose anything either. On the contrary, the feeling of missed opportunity is way bitter and unforgiving. I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t know…
Lastly, you can be smart about your mistakes as well. For example, you can take calculative or strategic risks to minimise the impact of failure if happens. For example, I am re-learning my poker skills. I used to love this game as it is a great combination of luck and strategy. However, if you’re a gambler, you can make a mistake and lose lots of money playing against big shots. Fortunately to me, I don’t have any addictions including gambling: they just don’t get stuck with me. However, I love to play. While learning, I am not going to the Casino and trashing my money out there. I go to small tournaments with set entry fees. If I lose, I lose the measured number but I gained a great joy from a poker game. If I win, it is a great bonus for me. Depending on how I feel (considering I do it as my hobby), I might just stick to tournaments but on a higher level – I get the joy from this social game rather than gaining money. However, if I were a gambler that is afraid to make a mistake, I am taking a calculative risk and eliminating my fear of losing.
Through mistakes, we do actually learn who we are, what our purpose is, and what way of living we want to pursue. The more you know yourself, the higher chance you find what you love to do in your life.
